What is Rotary?

Rotary International is a worldwide association of clubs for professionals and business persons, male and female. In international terms there are almost 20,000 clubs in over 150 countries. In Britain and Ireland there are over 60,000 "Rotarians" in almost 1,500 clubs, meeting weekly for fellowship, and to promote the ideal of service. Although membership is by invitation only, it is an organisation which prides itself on openness and has a high public profile. Rotary clubs meet weekly and generally they have a meal followed by a talk or presentation by an invited speaker. Whereas most clubs tend to meet on weekday evenings, there are some breakfast and lunchtime clubs in larger towns and cities.

Do not hesitate to contact any Rotary Club in order to see for yourself - you might like it! There are lists of clubs available at the Rotary International in Britain and Ireland (RIBI) website; for clubs in the London region, try District 1130's website.

The Object of Rotary is:

To encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

1. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.

2. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying by each Rotarian of his / her occupation as an opportunity to serve society.

3. The application of the ideal of service by every Rotarian to his / her personal, business and community life.

4. The advancement of international understanding, good-will, and peace through a world-fellowship of business and professional men and women united in the ideal of service.

The Four-Way Test
of the things we think, say or do

1. Is it the TRUTH?

2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
